Celebrated Mime Emerges from Shadows for One-Night Stand
By Daniel Gesmer, Camera Dance Critic
The Daily Camera, Sunday, August 27, 2000
On August 11, 2000, Samuel was interviewed by Kathryn Bernheimer, Boulder Correspondent for the Intermountain Jewish Newspaper. The interview began with Avital sharing a few glimpses of his Jewish heritage; and the years growing up as a youth in Morroco.
He believes these events assisted in forming his being and development as a productive artist of the community. Samuel learned at an early age, the value of silence. He found silence to be an impressive and powerful way to communicate which eventually lead to studying the art form of mime.
His grandfather taught him to "speak only when necessary," and he also learned to "never raise the voice for any reason."
I invite you to read Kathyrn's article, "Ssh!......Mime from Morroco," which weaves a tale of Samuel's cultural heritage with the learning and development of the art form - Mime; with the development of his work, BodySpeak - Moving Mind and Body.
Below is a short excerpt from one of his teachings, "Word Economy." This story was shared with his students in 1972, in Boulder, Colorado.
Word Economy
"My grandfather once told me that we are born with a certain number of words in our word bank. If one uses too many words (like overspending too much), it empties our word bank account that can become overdrawn, or we can become mute. So, when we use words only when necessary, we practice word economy."
"Words are only one of the ways to communicate. Ninety-nine percent of our real communication, however, occurs in silence through your body language."
"I highly recommend to practice one day of silence a week to achieve the ability to speak less and do more, produce more and consume less - practicing consistently the active wisdom of Word Economy."
I am confident you will find this article inspiring and a good learning experience.

This is a comprehensive article presenting a new look at the Art of Movement.
This article is an excellent piece attempting to introduce some aspects and examples of Samuel Avital's work, his discoveries and development of BodySpeak - The Avital Method.
The author links Samuel's personal experiences and stories with his work in sections like: Early Life, Teachers and Lessons, The Workshop Laboratory, The Sixth Sense, Kinesthesia and The Mind/Body Split, The Return to the Body and Notes.
The purpose is to introduce the BodySpeak Method and to inspire and stimulate a new way of thinking. It is a fresh new way of looking at the essence of the Art of Movement. It also attempts to describe the use of the human body as a vehicle for awakening and artistic production.
