Overcoming Dental Dread

Exercise 1

Begin with an inventory of yourself.

Read Slowly... and read at least twice through.

If you've been afraid of going to the dentist, consider this, that it's as if a part of you has been doing that, because you probably don't consciously decide to be afraid, you just are.

This part resides in your unconscious mind, which contains not only this part but also the intelligence your body needs to survive -- like the beating of your heart, your respiration and digestion.

And it is important to consider that this part has been just trying to protect you. You can begin by thanking that part for just trying to protect you. Go ahead and take a moment, stop reading, and thank that part of you for protecting you.

Now take another moment and ask that part what its ultimate positive intention is for you by making you so uncomfortable about going to the dentist that when it does, it protects you so it can then help you to have a deeper more positive experience now because you are protected.

Just ask that part what is its deepest intention for you in protecting you by making you afraid of going to the dentist. Ask that part what it wants for you once it has succeeded in protecting you.

[example: "Part of me that is protecting me, what is your ultimate positive intention for me in making me uncomfortable about going to the dentist?" "What do you want for me once you have succeeding in protecting me?"]

Just be patient and wait for that unconscious part to respond; it may have already. Some people get a sense like another part of them is responding that is not their conscious mind. And it also may seem a little unusual, which is a common response.

Just go inside and ask that part that makes you so uncomfortable about going to the dentist, just ask it, "What do you want for me that's positive once I'm protected".

Now take a moment and thank that part for wanting that for you and I'd like you to just tell that part that it would probably achieve its positive intention for you far more easily by allowing you to change how you experience going to the dentist.

And I'd like that part to consider that not wanting you to change how you represent and feel about visits to the dentist is in direct conflict with the prime directive of the unconscious mind which is survival. And that with good dental health your survival will be enhanced and that supports the job of the unconscious mind. Good.

Now let's continue with changing how you represent and experience visiting the dentist.

What is the problem you have had about dentists or dental work?
Being realistic, how do you want it to be for you?
What will it be like when you have made those changes now in the future?
As you look back and see what it was like to have had that problem... as you think about it now, here.

Now take a moment and close your eyes and imagine what it would be like now if you were in the dentist's office having dental work done. If it isn't a whole lot better, just start at the beginning and run through this process again. If you still have a problem after a few times with this process you probably should consider getting professional help. This is not meant to be a substitute or replacement for professional therapeutic help if that's what's needed.
